Indian Business Opportunities Part 2

Opportunity for Japanese Companies

This report follows on the India Outlook 2025 published last week which focused mainly on the manufacturing sector. Here we take up the service sector with focus on opportunities for Japanese companies.

Information Technology (IT) and Software Services

India’s IT and software services sector continues to grow rapidly, driven by digital transformation, AI integration, and increasing global demand for outsourcing. Japanese companies can leverage India’s strong talent pool for software development, AI-powered automation, and cybersecurity solutions. Opportunities exist in joint ventures with Indian IT firms, investment in SaaS-based businesses, and collaborations in emerging areas like blockchain and Web3 technologies. Additionally, Japanese firms can set up R&D centers in India to tap into cost-effective and high-skilled engineering talent.

2. Healthcare and HealthTech

India’s healthcare sector is experiencing rapid digitalization, with telemedicine, AI-driven diagnostics, and personalized healthcare solutions gaining traction. Japanese companies specializing in medical devices, AI-based health analytics, and robotics-assisted surgery can find opportunities in partnerships with Indian hospitals and healthtech startups. Japan’s expertise in elderly care technology can be introduced in India’s urban centers, while pharmaceutical collaborations can help streamline drug discovery and biotechnology research.

3. E-Commerce and RetailTech

With over 850 million internet users, India’s e-commerce sector is expanding beyond metro cities into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. Japanese consumer brands in electronics, fashion, food, and beauty can establish a direct-to-consumer (D2C) presence via Indian e-commerce platforms like Flipkart, Amazon India, and Meesho. Moreover, Japan’s expertise in retail automation, supply chain management, and AI-driven customer insights can benefit Indian retail-tech startups and logistics firms. Collaborations in sustainable packaging and smart retail solutions also offer significant potential.

4. EdTech and Upskilling Services

India’s EdTech market is growing due to increasing demand for skilling and higher education, driven by government initiatives like Skill India and NEP 2020. Japanese companies can collaborate with Indian platforms to provide specialized vocational training, AI-powered language learning, and STEM education programs. Investment in gamified learning and VR-based education technologies can help scale Japan’s expertise in precision learning methodologies. Additionally, opportunities exist in corporate upskilling partnerships, particularly in manufacturing, automotive, and IT domains, where Japanese firms excel.

5. Tourism, Hospitality, and TravelTech

India’s tourism and hospitality sector is rebounding post-pandemic, with increased demand for luxury experiences, eco-tourism, and cultural exchanges. Japanese travel companies can capitalize on India’s growing interest in premium Japanese experiences, including onsen (hot springs), wellness retreats, and traditional hospitality models like ryokan-style accommodations. Partnerships with Indian travel-tech platforms can help promote Japan as a destination, while joint ventures in boutique hotels and cultural experiences can attract high-net-worth Indian travelers. Additionally, AI-driven travel personalization services and smart hotel solutions offer lucrative opportunities.
